John Wycliffe or “The Morning Star” is a priest famous for starting the reformation though many say Martin Luther started it. He is also famous for translated the Bible into English from Latin for the common men.John Wycliffe lived in a time of sickness and war and sickness. John wycliffe was born in 1328 though no one knows his exact birth date. Wycliffe was born into a large family for his time. He went to school and was always close to his home. He went to Oxford around 1345, but the exact date is also not known. He studied and became a teacher there. He constantly protested about the indulgence selling, the teachings of purgatory, and transubstantiation. Because of this he was banished from teaching at Oxford. He translated the Bible into english in the 1380’s, and it took him over a year. He then handed these Bibles out to some preachers so they could preach the Bible in their own language. Most of these men died because they accepted John’s Bible, but most of them knew they would. John died on New Years Eve 1384 of a stroke. His bones were dug up and thrown into the river Swift. One big influence on John Wycliffe was the Bible. It helped him realize that the church had twisted what the Bible said. He devoured it and memorized it. Another influence was Erasmus. Without him Wycliffe never would have even read the Bible. He translated the Bible from Hebrew to Latin. Wycliffe could read Latin and therefore started reading it. John Wycliffe left us a start on bible translation. He was the first to translate the Bible to English, and he also was the inspiration for Wycliffe Bible Translators which have translated and written the Bible in over 2,000 languages. I think John’s passion and inspiration was from the Bible. It looked like everything he did was exactly what the Bible tells us too. He also cared for the English peasants very much. He translated the Bible so they could read it. He was deeply saddened during the peasant revolt in 1381 because thousands of peasants died.
