Hudson Taylor was a missionary that found a way to show people what Christianity is really about without forcing them and making them uncomfortable. Hudson was born on May 21, 1832 to a Christian family. His family was Methodist and his father worked as a pharmacist. When he was young, he never really excepted and didn't like the idea of God at all. Then, when he was seventeen, he read a pamphlet that was entitled "Poor Richard" and finally excepted Christ as his savior. At that time he met a famous missionary and it is thought that he learned his faith mission principles from the missionary. Hudson once borrowed a book entitled China: Its State and Prospects which he ate up. He then started studying Greek, Mandarin, Hebrew, and Latin. In 1851 he moved to a poor neighborhood to be a medical assistant with Robert Hardey. He had a yearning to go to China and in preparation, he began studying medicine at Royal London Hospital in 1852. All of England missions started taking an interest in China after its Civil War. He offered to be the first missionary of the Chinese Envangelisation Society. He left on September 19, 1853 for China before completing his studies. Hudson made 18 preaching tours and was poorly received by people even though he brought medicine to them. They called him the "Black Devil" because he wore a large black overcoat. He decided to abandon the look of an English person and decided to wear what a typical Chinese person would wear. Also while in China, he adopted a Chinese boy named Hanban. His medical supplies were destroyed in a fire. In 1856 he was robbed of everything he owned while traveling across China. He married Maria Jane Dyer in 1858. He met her in Ningbo working at a home for young girls. They adopted another boy and had nine children, three adopted and six biological (two Taylor had with his second wife). They also had three babies who died at birth. . In 1860 Marie and Hudson moved back to England to be with their families. While there, he also went around preaching at churches and raising funds for his next china mission. In 1865 he found China Inland Mission, his own personal ministry to China. Five years after returning to England. The Taylors returned to China in 1866 bringing with them twenty missionaries. All of them gave up their British ways to immerse themselves in the Chinese Culture. Maria died in 1871 and his own health deteriorated making him return to England. While there he got to know and married another Chinese missionary. He eventually returned to China and China Inland mission greatly grew. Bad times cam upon CIM during the boxer crisis. 58 of his missionaries were killed by Chinese revivalists. Hudson made many trips to and from China with a total of eleven. He died suddenly of old age in 1905 in China during his last visit. He was buried beside his first wife.
